1ST GLOBAL SYMPOSIUM ON FARMERS’ RIGHTS!
The First Global Symposium on Farmers’ Rights with the Convention on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture hosted by the Government of India in New Delhi. Mr. Sok Sotha, Founder and Managing Director of the Cambodian Farmer Federation Association of Agricultural Producers (CFAP Cambodia) and a member of the Board of the World Farmers’ Organization (WFO) for Asia, led his colleagues, including Dr. Nandini Azad and Ravi Kumar joined the discussion to highlight the importance of the rights of farmers, peasants, rural people and those who work in the rural areas.
Empowering farmers and rural dwellers, especially women, youth and all farming families to achieve the sustainable, equitable, environmentally friendly for our people and the planet. There was an active debate from multi-stakeholders, including the Government of the Republic of India, NGOs, Farmers’ organizations, the United Nations Agencies, Indigenous people, Researchers and other stakeholders.
Mr. Sok Sotha highlighted some points as follows: 1. Digital Information (DSI) is new to farmers, it confirms the evaluation of farmers-driven approaches to support and improve farmers’ livelihoods and well-being. Multi-stakeholder-driven approach involving scientists, Education sector, stakeholders and digital information developers to ensure that all actors work together with farmers to understand the real needs and wants of farmers and rural residents, 2. United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Farmers and Rural Workers (UNDROP) should find ways to achieve the goals of the Universal Declaration is key through national, regional and international workshops involving all stakeholders. Without the involvement of stakeholders, this goal will be difficult to achieve. Recognizing the knowledge and experience of farmers and rural workers, 3. The important message is a). Capacity building of farmers and rural workers b). National, regional and international workshops with the participation of all parties, and c). Policies Support and review existing policies.
There were about 3000 participants come from government, civil society and delegates.
