Small rural holderfarmer’s family is happy with increased chicken production!

picture1A smallholder farmer’s family, Mr. Chen Sakhorn and Mrs. Mao Samith a couple of the same age, 60 years old live in Koul village, Svay Ang commune, Svay Chrum district, Svay Rieng province, he is a member of chicken producer group of CFAP with the Svay Ang Agricultural Cooperative. The Sakhorns’ has five children, all of them are married and they created their new families separately, only one child still live in the same house with him.
The Sakhorns’ family received specific technical training on animal rearing (chicken) from CFAP operated by a member Svay Ang Agricultural Cooperative in collaboration with Samakum Apiwat Chamrous Khum Svay Ang in 2016 funded by the Mediuam Term Cooperation Programme (MTCP2-AFOSP-Cambodia). I used to raise chicken in traditional practice with little hopes because my chicken always die annually regularly. After receiving technical training, I know how to raise chicken technically with low risk. I can make feeds by myself to feed chicken. I noticed that my chicken are healthy than before compared to traditional rearing. I started up with 21 chicken, amongst those 6 heads of chicken provided by CFAP funded by MTCP2-AFOSP-Cambodia.
The Sakhorns’ has around 100 heads of chicken, just after 6 months i.e. since a start of September 2016 till January 2017 till present (May 2017). Last year 2016, the Sakhorns’ could sell around 7-8Kgs of chicken per month and the production has increased accordingly, now the family’s can sell around 30-40Kgs of chicken monthly to a collector. A kilogram of an organic chicken costs around 15000KHR or US$3.75 in average in Cambodia. Partially, organic chicken is more popular in Cambodia and the price is also better for smallholder farmers. However, the growing period is also a bit longer than commercial chicken rearing. Now I always sell chicken twice a month, said Mr. Sakhorn.
The Sakhorns’ is happy with new technical practice to rear chicken for sale and income of the family, they hope to increase chicken production in the future.
